Creating a hamburger menu on PowerBI
In PowerBI, bookmarks are extremely useful tools and do you know that if you know how to use it, you can create hamburger menus with bookmarks? Of course you can do some magic with bookmarks, but some might say what am I supposed to with it; well, there are some cases that dashboard is not enough for all visuals and there may some slicers or information which are not used frequently. These cases are exactly when you need a hamburger menu, your slicers/information are there as a pop-up upon your call, and when you are done with it, it’s just a small icon/image, having small footprint on your precious dashboard.
Dashboard above is a simple example of hamburger menus in PowerBI. While I was trying to build this customer-wise dashboard, instead of applying three different pages with same visuals but different values (orders, revenue and profit), I created a simple Switch formula, and set the values dynamically. For the detailed explanation of this technique, you can check this video. Yet this menu is not only ugly, but also is too big for the dashboard, therefore I decided to hide the switch menu unless I need it. To do that, what you have to do is creating two different bookmarks, one for open panel/menu view and another for closes panel/menu view. And then you can link these two views with two icon/images, that’s it. What you need to do is selecting the icon/image first, then Visualization>Action>Turn On the action>Type=Bookmark and selecting the right bookmark. Now you can enjoy your hamburger menu.
